Description
"East of the Sun, West of the Moon" is an illustration of the fairy tale of the same name.
I first learned about this tale when reading Edith Pattou's novel "East." I thought it was very dynamic and would make a beautiful illustration.
The heroine must travel to the troll queen's castle, which lies east of the sun and west of the moon, in order to rescue the prince. She must brave the unforgiving Arctic environment alone.
I wanted the landscape to seem overwhelming in comparison to the girl, and I felt this supported her lonely journey. There are also some things hidden in the picture which support motifs in the tale.
Painted in acrylic. Accented with white charcoal.
Time: 8 hours.
